OLD BRAIN OUTSMARTING

Outsmart the patterns that keep you small.

You can know what to do and still not do it. You can want change and still protect yourself from it.

OBO Method helps you notice the pattern, understand what it is trying to prevent, and test one small next move—so experience can give your mind better evidence.

No heroic leap required. Start with something small enough to try.

THE PATTERN

Feeling stuck is not a character flaw.

Overthinking, avoidance, perfectionism, and self-doubt can look like a lack of discipline. Often, they make more sense as protection: a part of you predicts that action could lead to pain, embarrassment, failure, or loss of control.

OBO does not ask you to fight that protection. It helps you meet it with curiosity—and collect new evidence through proportionate action.

Don’t argue with your mind. Give it a new experience.

THE METHOD

Five moves. One honest experiment.

1. Notice

Recognise the pattern that is active without turning it into your identity.

2. Defuse

Create a little distance between you and the thought, feeling, or prediction.

3. Decode

Ask what the pattern is trying to prevent—and what it expects will happen.

4. Dissolve

Loosen the pattern enough for choice. No forced positivity and no promise that discomfort disappears.

5. Expand

Take one proportionate step, compare prediction with reality, and keep what you learn.

WHY SMALL MATTERS

Small is not the compromise. Small is the mechanism.

If a step feels heroic, your protective system has every reason to resist it. A smaller experiment lowers the stakes while keeping the learning real.

The point is not to prove that nothing difficult will happen. The point is to discover what actually happens—and what you can handle next.

OBO LAB Ā· CURIOSITY, ORGANISED

A useful life should have room for strange experiments.

OBO Lab is where the method meets curiosity: bounded learning experiments across mind, body, work, connection, and performance.

The subjects may change. The standard does not: a clear question, a safe experiment, honest observation, and no pretending that one result fits everyone.

THE FOUNDER

Created by a curious generalist.

Harald Burgener built OBO Method from a question that kept returning across very different parts of life: Why can capable people understand so much—and still feel unable to move?

OBO is his way of connecting practical psychology, self-observation, skill learning, and real-world experiments without forcing a varied life into one narrow box.
